For thirty years, the design process has been organized around “handoffs” between stages. That structure is now breaking down, with Vizcom at the center of the shift. This session follows the journey from sketch to production, drawing on Vizcom’s work with design teams at New Balance, General Motors, and Hasbro to show how AI tools are changing the process in practice. It also considers the Korean market’s central role in this transformation.

Jihyun Song has spent around two decades in automotive design, expanding her practice beyond production vehicles into advanced design, future mobility, robotics, spatial design, and user experience. Her production work includes the interior of the Hyundai IONIQ 6. She now leads projects in Nano Mobility, MobED, and autonomous mobility, exploring new ways for people and technology to interact.

토스는 왜 디자인 스쿨을 만들었을까? 매달 매주 새로운 기술이 발표되고, 모든 메이커가 변화에 민감한 이때, 인재를 육성하는 교육기관은 어떤 도전을 해 나가야 할까? 파이는 ‘어떤 조건에서도 탁월함을 드러낼 수 있는 디자이너 육성’을 목표로 기존 교육의 관성과 틀을 깨보고 있다. 도구는 바뀌어도 무엇을 왜 만들지 판단하는 사고의 힘은 어떤 상황에서도 유효한 법. 파이는 이를 훈련으로 개화할 수 있다고 믿는다. 이번 시간을 통해 지난 반년간 파이(Phi)가 어떤 시도를 했고, 어떤 변화의 장면들을 목격했는지, 그리고 이는 지속 반복 가능한 것인지 이야기 나누고자 한다.

Jihong Kim began his design career at Samsung Electronics before taking on design leadership roles at startups in education and commerce. Since 2015, he has built design communities and connected with designers through online content and in-person events. He founded Design Spectrum, a community for designers working in technology, in 2017. He now leads Phi Institute of Design, Toss’s design school, which was established in 2025.

Why did Toss create a design school? As new technologies emerge week after week, creators must continually adapt. What, then, should institutions preparing the next generation of designers be doing differently? Phi aims to develop designers who can deliver excellent work under any conditions by challenging the conventions of design education. Tools may change, but the ability to decide what to make—and why—remains essential. Phi believes this capacity for judgment can be developed through training. In this session, Jihong Kim reflects on the school’s experiments over the past six months, the changes they have brought about, and whether these approaches can be sustained and repeated.

2019년 화마가 노트르담 대성당을 덮쳤다. 5년에 걸친 복원 끝에 다시 문을 연 대성당에는 건축뿐 아니라 새로운 시대를 위한 시각 언어도 필요했다. C-Album은 이곳에 깃든 역사와 영성, 건축적 상징성을 어떻게 현대적인 디자인으로 전환할지 깊이 탐구했다. 이번 시간은 정형화된 틀에서 벗어나 중세 원고에서 영감받은 대형 서적을 활용하는 '퍼포먼스형 강연' 방식을 통해 노트르담 대성당의 새로운 비주얼 아이덴티티 뒤에 숨겨진 창작 과정과 시각적 전략을 살핀다.
Introduction
Laurent Ungerer is a French graphic designer and president of the Paris-based
agency c-album. His work spans visual identity, signage, and cultural communications, with projects for
the Centre Pompidou, Louvre Abu Dhabi, Musée Picasso, Bibliothèque nationale de France, and Notre-Dame
de Paris. He has also taught at Parsons Paris and the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in
Paris.
Raphaël John is a designer and former partner at c-album. He began collaborating with the
agency on cultural and arts projects in 2016 and became a partner in 2021. Trained in object design, he
brings a detailed understanding of materials, manufacturing, and space to visual identity and signage
projects that connect historic settings with contemporary design.

TABULA: Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral New Visual Identity Making Process

In 2019, Notre-Dame de Paris was devastated by fire. Its reopening after five years of restoration called for both architectural renewal and a visual language for a new era. c-album explored how to translate the cathedral’s history, spirituality, and architectural symbolism into contemporary design. Moving beyond a conventional lecture, this session explores the creative process and visual strategies behind the new visual identity of Notre-Dame Cathedral through a performance-based presentation featuring a large-format book inspired by medieval manuscripts.

Anniina Koivu is a design writer, curator, and consultant, and Head of Master Theory at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. She founded Koivu, a knitwear and homeware brand, and co-founded U-Joints, a research project and exhibition series exploring connections in design and architecture. Her work spans research, publications, and exhibitions for brands including Vitra, Iittala, and Kvadrat, as well as leading museums.

Introduction
Emily Yan holds a BSc in Architecture and a Master of Architecture from the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London. She joined Snøhetta in 2018 and helped establish its presence in Asia. As director of Studio Hong Kong (Asia Region), she works across public, institutional, and private projects of varying scales. Her selected projects include the Busan Opera House, Banpo Ecological Playscape in Seoul, Cheongju New City Hall, AIRSIDE in Hong Kong, Solstice Culinary Space, and Sanya Resort Retail Development.

Introduction
Erwan Bouroullec is a French designer and artist based in Paris. A graduate of the École nationale supérieure d’arts de Paris-Cergy (ENSAPC), he co-founded a studio with his brother Ronan Bouroullec in the late 90s and has worked across furniture, everyday objects, electronics, and architectural installations for more than 25 years. His long collaboration with his brother Ronan produced designs for Vitra, HAY, Ligne Roset, Kvadrat, Flos, and Samsung. Since 2023, he has focused on an independent practice. Works designed by the brothers are held in the permanent collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
